Network and project progress is driven by Action Groups. Action Groups meet virtually 1 – 2 times per month and engage in asynchronous work, including protocol development, data pulls, and providing feedback to proposed ideas. The Coordinating Center facilitates Action Group activities by developing meeting agendas with input from group leads, recording and distributing meeting notes, and ensuring follow through on tasks.

Action Groups work under the guidance of the PI group and Leadership to reach network decisions. Once finalized, network decisions are documented in a network decision log, which serves as a reference for the network.

Three Action Groups are focused on specific elements of project development – Clinical Science & Health System, Implementation Science, and EHR Tools. The All Hands Action Group is composed of members from all focused Action Groups, to ensure cross-talk among the expertise areas of the network.

While the Implementation Science and EHR Tools groups support all network projects, Clinical Science and Health System Action Groups are formed per project in order to ensure appropriate expertise in the clinical project context. Additional subgroups are organized as needed, such as a subgroup composed of biostatisticians with the goal of developing an analysis plan for the gLHS projects.

Goals: Create a cohesive protocol by synthesizing work and feedback from all groups

  • Overall protocol development, finalization, and ongoing monitoring
  • Facilitate division of tasks to appropriate action subgroups
  • Ensure feedback/task deliverables from subgroups are integrated in all aspects of protocol
  • Monitor progress of project implementation, ongoing evaluation, and analysis

Goals: Define project context (determinants); Define effectiveness outcomes

  • Identify clinical/system/patient barriers and facilitators of implementation
  • Identify clinical, system, and patient level outcomes (cross-scope with IS)
  • Lead evaluation of clinical and service outcomes

Co-Leads (Project 1): Alexander Bick, MD, PhD (Vanderbilt University Medical Center) and Maren Scheuner, MD, MPH (Veterans Affairs)

Co-Leads (Project 2): Elizabeth McNally, MD, PhD (Northwestern Medicine) and Ana Morales MS, CGC (Geisinger)

Goals: Select strategies based on context; Define implementation outcomes

  •  Guide selection of implementation study design, framework, and strategies
  •  Identify and lead evaluation of implementation outcomes (cross-scope with CS&HS)
  •  Development/recommendation of tools for engagement, adaptation tracking

Co-Leads: Carolyn Audet, PhD (Coordinating Center) and Rinad Beidas, PhD (Northwestern Medicine)

Goals: Operationalize strategies within the LHS/EHR environment; Define outcomes that will be extracted from EHR

  • Define timeline for technical strategy implementation within study design
  •  Technical builds related to implementation strategies, ongoing monitoring, and outcomes reporting
  •  Data harmonization of EHR-derived and tool-derived data
  •  Lead evaluation of structured/EHR outcomes data

Co-Leads: Kensaku Kawamoto, MD, PhD (University of Utah Health) and Jason Vassy, MD, MPH (Veterans Affairs)
